There are many definitions but Julie Hay (2007) says based on Brigid Proctor (1986).
" The supervisor has a role in Normative, Formative and Supportive aspects of the practice of coaches. The supervisor has responsibility for ensuring that the coach is practising in competent and ethical ways. There is a role in the development and growth of the coach via feedback, direct guidance through theorectical knowledge, personal attributes, and self awareness. The supportive element is for when the inevitable doubts and insecurities arise or when challenge is required "
"Coaching Supervision is a new area of development in the coaching profession. Currently there are shifts in the professional coaching organizations such as ICF, AC, EMCC and CIPD which encourage coaching supervision to be more available to coaches as an essential part of their continuing professional development and now compulsory preparation for accreditation.
The Professional Coaching Organisations are working towards publishing standards or competancies for Coaching Supervisors to adhere to. Therefore if you choose to train as a Coaching Supervisor you may be offered Continuing Education Units awarded by the ICF but these are measured against standard coaching competancies not criteria especially standardised for Coaching Supervisors.
Supervision has been used in many professions from the therapeutic field, social work and the medical world. Supervisors within the counselling and social work field will tell you of years of disciplined study, personal psychotherapy, intensive supervision and an arduous journey to become a fully fledged supervisor.
Should we require the same intensive training for supervisors of coaches?Would it be more beneficial to have a business background for supervising Executive Coaches? Can a senior coach with years of experience become a robust and conscientious supervisor without further training? Who judges the effectiveness of a supervisor?
As it stands right now, you the coach will have the final say on what constitutes a competent supervisor.
